Connecting to your payroll provider directly
Causal directly connects to various payroll providers. This includes common providers like Bamboo HR, Justworks, Gusto, Zenefits, Workday, HiBob, Trinet, ADP Workforce Now etc. To see a full list of providers, visit Causal's data page.
You can connect for free during your trial. To continue to use the integration you need to upgrade to a paid plan.
Note: some payroll providers may create a third-party login/license when you connect.
We do not yet connect with Rippling, but we have detailed instructions for connecting your Rippling data via a Google Sheet here.
How to connect
We recommend connecting via Causal's Headcount wizard (you can find this in the New Model menu), this way you'll get a Headcount model directly connected to your payroll provider.
FAQs on setup
You will need to be an Admin of your HRIS / payroll system in order for us to get the key information like Salary, Employee Names etc.
If you yourself are not an Admin, you can either:
- Enter an Admins' credentials in the data connection creation flow in Causal
- Or if your admin has a Causal account, they could create the data source themselves from scratch, with their own credentials
You will also need to ensure that you grant all necessary permissions that are requested in the connection flow. These differ slightly by HRIS -- open this link to see a full breakdown (by our API provider, Merge).
Available Data Items
Causal generates the data items listed below from your HRIS by default. These are broken down by Employee, and we'll also pull in mappings to Team/Location/Department etc.

If you are on a Business plan we can also pull custom fields for you (e.g. Bonus %).
Limitations
Some payroll integrations do not support all of Causal's features.
BambooHR does not support locations outside of the US.
Namely does not support historical employment data.
Personio does not pull in salary for future start date employees until they've started.
